A 10-year-old boy in Houston was shot while playing a game known as ding-dong ditch with his friends, according to statements from local police. The incident took place around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, on the east side of the city.

Police said the group of children knocked on a door and then ran away. As they fled, someone emerged from the house and fired shots at them.

The home where the shooting occurred is located just down the street from where the boy and his friends live.

Officials reported that the child was shot several times and remains in critical condition.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said the alleged shooter initially refused to come out of the house. It was only after an officer used a bullhorn to call for him to surrender that he exited with his hands raised.

Police have launched an investigation into the shooting.
