Boaters off the coast of California recently observed a blue whale, an event that the Monterey Bay Whale Watch described as a rare opportunity. According to a September 16 Facebook post by the organization, initial foggy conditions made visibility difficult, but persistence was rewarded when the large marine mammal appeared.

The blue whale surfaced briefly, took several breaths, and then disappeared into the fog. In addition to the blue whale sighting, boaters also witnessed humpback whales feeding alongside sea lions.

Blue whales are recognized as the largest animals on Earth. They can weigh up to 330,000 pounds and reach lengths of 110 feet—comparable to a ten-story building—according to information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/blue-whale). Their lifespan typically reaches up to 90 years, although one individual reportedly lived for 110 years as noted by Whale and Dolphin Conservation (https://us.whales.org/whales-dolphins/species-guide/blue-whale/).

Monterey Bay Whale Watch highlighted the rarity of such encounters: “Only 1% of the world’s population has ever seen a blue whale!” Monterey is located approximately 120 miles southwest of San Francisco.

Social media responses reflected enthusiasm about the experience. One user commented on Facebook, “Oh so amazing!” Another added, “So amazing to see these whales.”
