Four Powerball tickets sold in California each won $1,165,399 in the drawing held on Saturday, August 30, according to the California Lottery. These tickets matched five of the winning numbers but did not match the Powerball number required for the jackpot, which reached $1.03 billion.
The winning tickets were purchased at a Mobil gas station in Pleasant Hill, a 7-Eleven store in Duarte, Ontario Liquor in Ontario, and another 7-Eleven store in Milpitas. Nineteen other players in California won nearly $20,000 each by matching some of the numbers drawn.
Lottery officials explained that prize amounts are adjusted based on ticket sales and the number of winners within California.
Across other states, tickets sold in Colorado, Indiana, and New Hampshire matched five numbers plus the Power Play multiplier but not the Powerball. Each of these tickets earned $2 million. Additional tickets from Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania also matched five numbers but not the Powerball to win $1 million each.
Nationally, 115 players matched four numbers plus the Powerball to win $50,000 each. Twenty-seven players added the Power Play multiplier to their wins for prizes of $150,000.
The winning numbers for this drawing were 3, 18, 22, 27 and 33 with a Powerball of 17. The Power Play multiplier was three times.
No ticket won the grand prize during this drawing. As a result, the jackpot is estimated to rise to $1.1 billion for the next drawing on Monday, September 1. The cash value is about $498.4 million.
More than 4.7 million other tickets across the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 up to $150,000.
The last time someone claimed a grand prize was on May 31 when a player from California won $204.5 million.
To win the jackpot prize in Powerball requires matching all five white balls and the red Powerball number; odds are one in over 292 million.
Powerball draws take place every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time and can be viewed online or via broadcast television channels across participating states. Tickets are available for purchase up until shortly before each draw; prices and cutoff times depend on state regulations.
Powerball is played across most U.S. jurisdictions including 45 states as well as Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.
