The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have released new summary tables and public use files from the 2024 Rental Housing Finance Survey (RHFS). The RHFS is recognized as the only data source that provides a full view of mortgage financing for all types of rental properties in the United States.

The survey collects detailed information on property characteristics such as value, purchase price, year built, year acquired, number of buildings, number of rental units, and recent improvements or upgrades. It also includes data on rental status and monthly rents in residential buildings.

Other topics covered by the RHFS include commercial use of space within residential structures, property management and ownership status, benefits received from federal, state, local or nongovernmental programs, as well as mortgage characteristics like the number of mortgages or debts on a property, original and outstanding loan amounts, and payment frequency.

The Census Bureau conducted this HUD-sponsored survey by collecting data between June and November 2024. For further details about the survey or to access the new summary tables and public use files, interested parties can visit the Rental Housing Finance Survey (RHFS) webpage.
