An 86-year-old man died after being attacked by two dogs while walking in Norwalk, California, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The incident occurred on September 6 when the man was mauled by two unleashed rottweilers.

Deputies responding to the scene found the man with multiple dog bites. He was transported to a local hospital for injuries to his arm and died 24 hours later.

Two witnesses intervened to stop the dogs and called emergency services. Lt. Steve De Jong of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau said, “The owner of the dogs was actually driving around looking for the dogs because he knew they got out. He was extremely apologetic. He was devastated.”

The owner of the rottweilers remained at the scene following the attack and has not been charged or fined, according to deputies. Animal control officers have taken custody of both dogs.

Officials stated that confirmation of the man’s cause of death will come from the medical examiner’s office.

Norwalk is located about 15 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
