Cameras are being installed at five more schools in Macon to enforce speed limits in school zones, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. The affected schools are Northwoods Academy, Bruce Elementary, James H. Porter Elementary, John R. Lewis Elementary and Martin Luther King Elementary.

The sheriff’s office stated that the cameras will begin operating on September 3. Initially, drivers caught speeding will receive warnings. However, starting October 4, tickets will be issued and “no more warnings will be issued,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“Remember, the cameras will only be operational during school hours when the lights are flashing,” the sheriff’s office said.

The cameras will monitor traffic during specific drop-off and pickup times for each school. For Northwoods, Bruce, James H. Porter and John R. Lewis elementaries, drop-off is from 7:20 to 9:20 a.m., while Martin Luther King Elementary has a drop-off window from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Pickup times for Northwoods are from 2 to 4 p.m.; for Bruce, James H. Porter and John R. Lewis elementaries from 2:20 to 4:20 p.m.; and for Martin Luther King Elementary from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than ten miles per hour during these periods may receive citations as recorded by the automated system.
