Renee Good, who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, previously lived in Kansas City as recently as the fall of 2023, according to court records.
On October 18, 2023, Good filed a petition in Jackson County Circuit Court to change her last name from Renee Nicole Macklin to Renee Nicole Macklin Good. She listed a Kansas City address and stated her reason for the change: “I want to share a name with my partner.” The court documents also noted that she had three children—two living in Colorado and one in Kansas City at the time of filing. Her uncontested name change was approved on November 21, 2023.
Good, aged 37, died during a targeted operation conducted by ICE agents. At a news conference, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the incident by saying one of the agent’s vehicles got stuck in snow and agents were trying to free it when Good “weaponized her vehicle” and tried to run over them. Noem characterized the act as domestic terrorism.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey challenged this account during his own news conference. He said video evidence contradicted claims that Good attempted to hit agents with her car. “Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bs,” Frey said. “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody getting killed. Your only reason for being in our city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing the opposite.” He added a message directed at ICE: “Get the f out of Minneapolis.”
Images from the scene showed a Honda Pilot with Missouri license plates and a bullet hole through its windshield.
Donna Ganger, Good’s mother, confirmed her daughter’s identity and said she lived with her partner in Minneapolis. Ganger told local media: “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
