A recent Gallup poll shows a record-high gap between Republican and Democratic approval of President Donald Trump, seven months into his second term. The survey, conducted from August 1 to 20 with 1,094 U.S. adults, highlights the deepening political divide over Trump’s job performance.
Trump’s presidency has seen several major policy moves in recent months. He has increased efforts to limit illegal immigration, imposed tariffs on most foreign imports, and signed a large spending bill known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” At the same time, he has faced challenges in ending ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and has been at the center of controversy regarding his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
According to the poll results, 93% of Republicans approve of Trump’s performance as president, while only 1% of Democrats share that view. This 92-point difference equals the largest partisan divide ever recorded by Gallup for presidential approval—a record first set in October 2020 during Trump’s previous term. Before Trump, no president had seen a partisan gap greater than 86 points.
The approval rate among Democrats is also at its lowest point measured for Trump—tied with June this year—and matches previous lows such as the 2% Democratic support he received in June 2020 and July 2025. These figures are similar to former President George W. Bush’s low point among Democrats during the financial crisis in 2008.
For comparison, Republican support for former President Joe Biden hit its lowest at just 2% during several months in 2023 and 2024.
Overall, Trump’s current approval rating stands at 40%, an increase from July’s figure of 37%, though still lower than his ratings earlier this term.
The poll also reveals significant partisan differences on specific issues like foreign affairs and economic management. On foreign affairs, 92% of Republicans expressed approval compared to just 3% of Democrats; on economic issues, approval stood at 93% among Republicans versus only 4% among Democrats. Among all respondents surveyed, Trump’s approval was rated at 39% for foreign affairs and at 37% for his handling of the economy.
Gallup notes that these results come with a margin of error of four percentage points.
“Republicans and Democrats have never been more divided when it comes to how they view the president,” according to Gallup.
