Georgians are still dealing with the effects of Winter Storm Fern, which has brought ongoing rain, icy conditions, high winds, and possible tornadoes to parts of the state. Georgia Power reports that since the storm began, power has been restored to about 70,000 customers. This work is being carried out by a team of 10,000 personnel from Georgia Power, contract companies, and partner utilities.
These crews continue to respond as weather conditions allow. Additional outages have occurred today due to severe weather linked to the storm.
Georgia Power is reminding residents that dangerous conditions can remain after a storm passes. The company urges everyone to follow advice from local, state, and federal emergency authorities in affected areas.
“Watch for downed wires. Downed power lines may be hidden by debris or fallen trees,” Georgia Power stated. “Take care if using a portable generator. Follow all manufacturers’ instructions, avoid using generators in enclosed spaces and be mindful of electrical safety. Click here for more safety tips.”
The company also warned: “Never touch any downed wire or attempt to remove tree branches from power lines – it can kill.” They added: “Don’t step in standing water or saturated ground where downed lines may be present. They could be electrified.” Customers were advised: “Avoid chain link fences. They may be electrified by a downed line out of sight and conduct electricity over great distances.”
Residents are also asked to watch for Georgia Power crews working across the state and follow guidance from officials on road conditions and travel advice. The company reminded drivers: “In the days following Winter Storm Fern, move over lane for utility vehicles stopped on the side of the road – it’s the law in Georgia.”
With cold temperatures expected to persist throughout the week—remaining well below freezing for several days—Georgia Power encourages customers to stay alert and review resources available at https://www.georgiapower.com/save.html aimed at reducing energy costs during cold weather.
