Georgia Power is preparing to respond to possible damage and power outages as Winter Storm Fern approaches Georgia. The storm is expected to bring significant snow, ice, strong winds, and subfreezing temperatures over the weekend. More than 10,000 personnel from Georgia Power, contractors, and partner utilities from Florida and other states are ready to support restoration efforts.

According to forecasts, freezing rain and cold temperatures could cause ice accumulation on tree branches. This increases the risk of branches breaking and falling onto power lines, which can result in outages. Wind may also contribute to trees or limbs falling onto lines.

The company has been tracking weather developments for nearly a week as storm predictions have changed. In preparation for the storm’s arrival in Georgia, crews are being moved closer to areas where damage is likely. Once conditions are safe, teams will assess damages, assign resources, clear vegetation, and begin repairs. Crews are prepared to work continuously until power is restored.

Georgia Power advises customers to be ready for potential extended outages if the storm causes severe damage or impassable roads delay restoration work. Customers are reminded to follow emergency management advice and prioritize safety.

Several tools are available for customers:
– Outage Alerts: Subscribers receive personalized notifications via text message.
– Outage & Storm Center: The website at GeorgiaPower.com/Storm allows customers to update contact information for alerts, report outages, check outage status at any time by calling 888-891-0938, and access safety tips.
– Outage Map: An interactive map provides near real-time updates on outages across the state.
– Mobile App: The Georgia Power app for Apple and Android devices offers access to storm information.
– Social Media: Updates are posted on X (Twitter) at @GeorgiaPower.

Safety recommendations include making an emergency plan with family members who may need extra support during an outage; building or updating an emergency kit; using portable generators safely according to manufacturer instructions; watching out for utility crews working during hazardous conditions; never touching downed wires; avoiding pulling tree limbs off power lines; and reporting fallen wires immediately by calling 911 or Georgia Power.

In response to Winter Storm Fern, disconnections for non-payment will be suspended from Friday, Jan. 23 through Thursday, Jan. 29 for all commercial and residential customers.

Georgia Power encourages energy conservation during cold weather since prolonged low temperatures can increase usage. Tips on saving energy can be found at www.GeorgiaPower.com/Save.
