Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay announced on Instagram that he recently underwent surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer. Ramsay posted a photo showing a bandage below his left ear and clarified in the caption that it was not the result of cosmetic surgery.
Ramsay expressed gratitude for his medical team, stating, “grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma. Thank you!”
He also shared an image revealing stitches running from his ear to his jaw. In his message to followers, Ramsay emphasized the importance of sun protection: “Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend. I promise you it’s not a face lift! I’d need a refund,” he wrote.
Supporters responded with messages of encouragement and appreciation for raising awareness about skin cancer prevention. One commenter said, “Heal quickly Chef and thank you for bringing awareness to all of us.” Another added, “You’re one of my favorite people Chef. Overjoyed that this was something you monitored closely and was able to get it taken care of.” A fan who has experienced similar health issues commented, “I got the same type of Cancer, and had IT already 6 times surgically removed. People please wear SPF.”
Ramsay has six children—Matilda, Megan, Holly, Jack, Oscar, and Jesse—with wife Tana Ramsay. Their ages range from 1 to 27 years old.
Basal cell carcinoma is described by the Mayo Clinic as a skin cancer that begins in cells responsible for producing new skin as old cells die off. It often appears as a transparent bump or other changes on areas exposed to sunlight such as the head and neck (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/basal-cell-carcinoma/symptoms-causes/syc-20354187). The clinic advises seeking medical attention if any persistent growths or sores develop.
