Heavy equipment operators and administrative staff employed by Akima at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union, according to a March 10 announcement. The group of 10 workers will now begin the process of negotiating their first union contract.
The decision to unionize is significant for these employees, as it provides them with an opportunity to negotiate collectively for wages, job protections, and other workplace benefits. The campaign was led by IAM District W24 Business Representative and Organizer Aubria Hopes, who worked closely with the workers throughout the organizing effort.
The organizing campaign began when a majority of heavy equipment operators expressed support for forming a union. Their involvement encouraged administrative employees to participate in discussions about collective bargaining. Meetings were held where topics such as fair treatment and stronger workplace protections were discussed among the group.
Despite challenges during the process—including an employer challenge to the petition and delays caused by a temporary closure of the National Labor Relations Board—the workers remained committed to their goal. “From the very beginning, these workers understood the power of standing together,” said Hopes. “They asked thoughtful questions, supported one another throughout the process, and stayed focused on building a stronger future where they have a real voice at work.”
With shop stewards and a bargaining committee now elected, preparations are underway for contract negotiations. “This organizing victory shows what is possible when working people come together and demand respect on the job,” said IAM Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez. “We are proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family and look forward to standing with them as they negotiate a contract that reflects their value and the important work they perform.” IAM District W24 President Brandon Bryant added: “When workers unite, they gain the power to raise standards on the job. Our union is proud to support these members as they move forward.”
