A hiker was swept 300 feet by a flash flood in Hurricane Wash canyon, Utah, after a sudden thunderstorm on Saturday, Sept. 6, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the hiker managed to climb a tree to escape and called authorities for help. Both the hiker and a companion were caught in the flood. The first hiker sustained minor injuries and was evacuated by helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety. The second hiker was later found safe.

The same storm caused creeks to overflow and left seven vehicles trapped on nearby roads due to washouts. Deputies and rescue teams worked into the night to remove obstacles so those vehicles could safely reach a highway.

Kane County is located near the Arizona border, about 300 miles south of Salt Lake City.
