Howard “Howie” Huestis, president of IAM Local 1746, has been recognized for his longstanding dedication to both union members at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut, and the wider community.
Huestis emphasized his personal connection to the area, stating, “I grew up in this town. I am dedicated to this town. I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of needing donations.”
Under Huestis’s leadership, Therese Hervieux and Taylor Salmon from the IAM Local 1746 Women’s Committee have maintained a partnership with East Hartford Public Schools. Each year, they organize an event that distributes thousands of school supplies to children in need. The event is highly anticipated by students and families.
The most recent supply drive was held at East Hartford Green Park. Booths were set up where volunteers distributed backpacks, notebooks, rulers, pencils, and other essential items. Additional support came from the IAM Eastern Territory, which contributed more supplies for distribution.
At a recent meeting of the Connecticut State Council, Howie Huestis received an IAM Human Rights Award. The award was presented by David Sullivan, General Vice President of IAM Eastern Territory, along with Chief of Staff Lorie Wilson. They recognized Huestis for establishing and sustaining the backpack rally initiative that supports local families.
Over time, the event has grown to include participation from other community organizations and sometimes health services as well. These efforts aim to help students begin their school year with needed resources.
