Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 2198 Young Workers Committee in Houston recently led a winter blanket drive to support people experiencing homelessness. The initiative, conducted in partnership with the local’s Community Service Committee, resulted in 30 bags containing blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets being distributed ahead of the winter season. All items were donated by members of IAM Local 2198.

Participants from the Young Workers Committee included Chairperson Quintarius Oliver along with Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. Community Service Committee Chairperson Albert Harmason and committee members Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges also took part in organizing the event.

The Young Workers Committee has been active in other community initiatives as well. They recently hosted their first Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser, which brought together union members, families, and community supporters. Proceeds from this event supported Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines, an organization that provides service dogs at no cost to recipients.

Additionally, the committee collaborated with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School by donating more than 50 backpacks filled with supplies for students before the start of the school year.

“This is a powerful example of union values in action,” said IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”

IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez commented on the involvement of younger members: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members. From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”

Dee Colbert, IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director, added: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities. The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”

Through these outreach efforts, IAM Local 2198’s young members continue their focus on supporting those in need while representing core values promoted by their organization.
