An Illinois man faces charges after police say he attempted to kill his wife in their Buffalo Grove home, but was stopped when a lawn care worker intervened.

According to a news release from the Buffalo Grove Police Department on September 3, Cody J. Romano, 34, allegedly tried to suffocate his 29-year-old wife with a pillow on August 20. During the attack inside their home around 11 a.m., police said Romano told his wife he was going to kill her.

Police reported that the woman managed to escape and ran outside toward a nearby lawn care worker for help. The worker protected her as Romano followed them outside and attempted to pull her back into the house. After a brief struggle, Romano left the scene, authorities said.

Officers later apprehended Romano when he returned. He experienced a medical episode and was taken to a hospital. After being released eight days later, he was brought to the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Romano is charged with attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery. He remains in custody ahead of a pre-trial hearing set for September 23, according to police.

Buffalo Grove is located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
