Macon-Bibb County has opened applications for the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) for the 2025-2026 academic year. The program is designed to educate high school students about how local and state government operates. Participants will attend monthly sessions, visit various sites, meet with officials, and learn professional conduct.

The application process is open to all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students living in Macon-Bibb County, regardless of which school they attend. Interested students should email Dr. Henry Ficklin at hficklin@maconbibb.us to begin the application process. Applicants are required to complete an application form, answer questions about their experiences in school and personal life, and participate in an interview with a program leader. The deadline for applications is September 19, 2025 at 5:00 p.m.

“Our GCAPS program just keeps getting better and better,” says Dr. Henry Ficklin, Executive Director of Community Affairs. “We are thrilled to provide this unique opportunity for our students once again. It’s more than just an after-school program, but an opportunity to experience things most students their age won’t get to. They get to meet elected officials, department heads, and see first-hand what makes our community run.”

Students who take part in GCAPS will also have the chance to apply for the Lester M. Miller Academic Scholarship. Winners of this scholarship will be announced during the annual Mayor’s Sneaker Ball event in December.
