A man was rescued after falling down a cliff on Mackinac Island, Michigan, according to the local fire department. The incident occurred when the Mackinac Island Fire Department (MIFD) and emergency medical services responded to a call reporting that a man had fallen and possibly broken his arm.
“At 1:57pm MIFD along with EMS was dispatched for a man who fell down a cliff and had a possible broken arm. Updates from dispatch while units were enroute was that the man was slipping and couldn’t hold on much longer,” the Mackinac Island Fire Department said in an Aug. 31 Facebook statement.
Rescue teams split into two groups, with one using technical lines at the top of the cliff and another approaching from below with a truck. “Fortunately, Ladder 2 was able to reach the man and FF Joshua Carley ascended the ladder and brought the man down. The man was turned over to EMS. It was said he had about 10 seconds left before letting go,” the department said.
Personnel at a nearby water filtration plant helped locate the individual during the rescue effort.
The fire department reported that climbing cliffs on Mackinac Island is not allowed, noting this incident marks the second such rescue this year. “Because of patient confidentiality we’re unable to post pics of the rescue,” the department said.
The man’s condition is stable following treatment by emergency personnel.
Mackinac Island has banned motor vehicles since 1901 and can be reached by ferry from Mackinaw City, which is about 280 miles north of Detroit.
