A man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl over several years, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office in Oregon.
The case began in May 2016 when the then-11-year-old disclosed to her friends that Edgar Ocampo-Reza had been raping her. Her friends encouraged her to report the abuse, and she later told a school counselor about what had happened, prosecutors said.
According to the attorney’s office, Ocampo-Reza assaulted the girl while her mother was at work on Saturdays. The nature of his relationship with the victim was not specified by prosecutors. Attorney information for Ocampo-Reza was not immediately available.
DNA evidence linked Ocampo-Reza to the crimes. After learning about the report, he fled to Mexico. Authorities did not specify how long he remained there before returning to Oregon.
Multnomah County prosecutors worked with local and international law enforcement agencies and were able to extradite Ocampo-Reza back to Oregon.
Following a weeklong trial, Ocampo-Reza, now 53, was found guilty on 12 counts of sodomy and 24 counts of sex abuse. He received a sentence of 38 years in prison.
Portland is the county seat for Multnomah County.
