Clifford Briggs of Silver Spring initially believed he had won $10,000 from a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket. After purchasing groceries, Briggs bought six Double Your Money tickets at a Wheaton store’s lottery kiosk. He scratched one ticket partially and saw he matched numbers for what appeared to be a $10,000 prize.
Briggs shared the news with family and friends. However, after scratching more of the ticket, he found another matching number for an additional $10,000. When he finished scratching the entire ticket, it revealed a top prize of $100,000.
According to Maryland Lottery officials, Briggs then made a copy of his ticket and took it to a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store to confirm the win by scanning it. The scan confirmed that he had indeed won $100,000.
“I guess it’s real,” Briggs told lottery officials he thought to himself.
Briggs is a retired railroad worker and Army veteran who has previously won prizes from Maryland lottery games and casinos. He said this is his largest single prize so far. He plans to use part of his winnings to pay off his car and save the rest.
Wheaton is located about 35 miles southwest of Baltimore.
