A Maryland man, Scott Twigg, recently experienced an unexpected turn of luck after visiting a convenience store in Cumberland. On September 7, Twigg visited the store intending to purchase his usual scratch-off ticket, but it was not available. Instead, he opted for several $5 FAST PLAY tickets and later decided to try a $10 FAST PLAY Lucky Numbers ticket.

According to Maryland Lottery officials, Twigg initially cashed in some small prizes from the first set of tickets before buying the Lucky Numbers ticket. After scanning the new ticket, he was instructed by the machine to take it to the cashier.

“I did, and she said she couldn’t cash it,” Twigg said. Puzzled by this response, he asked why not. “Because you just won the jackpot,” he said the cashier told him.

The cashier showed Twigg that one of his numbers matched the winning icon for the game’s progressive jackpot, which at that time was worth $140,569.

Twigg works as a restaurant manager and already has plans for how he will use his winnings. “I’m going to buy a house, get a car and put anything left in savings,” he said. Despite his good fortune, Twigg stated that he still intends to continue working long hours but acknowledged that “the windfall will allow him to breathe a little easier.”

Cumberland is located in northwest Maryland.
