Ben Olson, a graduate student at Mercer University’s College of Professional Advancement, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Atlanta Metropol Continuing Education Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who are pursuing careers in criminal justice and public safety.

Olson is working toward his master’s degree in criminal justice and public safety leadership and plans to graduate in December. He intends to begin a career in law enforcement after completing his studies. “I was honored to receive the 2025 Atlanta Metropol Continued Education Scholarship, which reflects my commitment to professional growth and service,” Olson said.

Olson previously earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Mercer University. During his undergraduate years, he served as starting catcher and team captain for the Mercer Bears baseball team. He recently completed an internship with the Cobb County Police Department, where he observed patrol operations, community policing, and problem-solving practices firsthand.

“My academic background, athletic discipline and passion for justice have prepared me to enter the law enforcement field with integrity, leadership and a dedication to serving my community,” Olson said.

Dr. Stephen E. Ruegger, associate professor of leadership studies at Mercer University and a member of Metropol since 2013, nominated Olson for the scholarship award. “Ben’s commitment to excellence and his passion for the field of criminal justice are truly commendable,” Dr. Ruegger said. “Winning the Metropol Scholarship is a well-deserved recognition of his hard work in the classroom, and I’m proud to see his talents and dedication honored in this way.”

Olson is now the fourth student from Mercer’s College of Professional Advancement to be awarded a Metropol Scholarship over the past decade.

Mercer University’s College of Professional Advancement offers a fully online M.S. in organizational leadership degree that includes a new graduate pathway focused on criminal justice. This program features advanced coursework on ethical leadership, conflict resolution, and contemporary issues within criminal justice organizations while providing flexibility through multiple start dates each year.

Atlanta Metropol Inc., which awards these scholarships, works with corporate leaders as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies across Metropolitan Atlanta to foster collaboration between public- and private-sector partners aimed at enhancing regional safety initiatives.
