Mercer University’s Dr. Joseph M. Hendricks Center for Campus Initiatives will host a program to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event is scheduled for January 14, from 6-8 p.m., at the Willet Science Center auditorium on Mercer’s Macon campus.
Justice Verda M. Colvin, who was appointed to the Georgia Supreme Court in July 2021 by Governor Brian Kemp, will deliver the keynote address. Justice Colvin is noted as the first African-American female appointed by a Republican governor to Georgia’s highest court.
The program will also include students presenting selected readings from Dr. King’s speeches and writings, focusing on his commitment to justice and civic responsibility.
Tracy B. Artis, executive director of The Dr. Joseph M. Hendricks Center for Campus Initiatives and Federal TRIO Programs, said: “The Martin Luther King Jr. Program is a vital expression of Mercer University’s commitment to leadership, service and social responsibility, while also strengthening its enduring relationship with the Macon community.” Artis added: “More than a commemoration, the program invites reflection, dialogue and action, encouraging participants to engage thoughtfully with Dr. King’s vision of justice and beloved community. By bringing together students, faculty, and community members, it fosters unity, inspires leadership and affirms that meaningful progress is achieved through collective effort. In doing so, the program ensures that Dr. King’s legacy remains a living force, guiding Mercer and Macon toward a more just and compassionate future.”
The event is open to both the campus community and the public; registration is required for Mercer students and staff.
