A Powerball ticket sold in Monroe, North Carolina, narrowly missed the $1.03 billion jackpot in the August 30 drawing but still secured a significant prize. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, the ticket matched four of the five winning numbers plus the Powerball. The player had also purchased the Power Play option, increasing their winnings from $50,000 to $150,000.
Two additional players in North Carolina each won $50,000 by matching four numbers and the Powerball without selecting Power Play.
Across the United States, several other lottery participants won large prizes. Players in Colorado, Indiana, and New Hampshire each received $2 million after matching five numbers with Power Play but missing the Powerball. In Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, players who matched five numbers without the Powerball won $1 million each. Four winners in California received $1.1 million apiece due to state-specific prize adjustments based on ticket sales and number of winners.
The national Powerball website reports that since no one claimed the grand prize in this drawing, the jackpot will increase to an estimated $1.1 billion for Monday’s drawing on September 1. The cash value is estimated at about $498.4 million.
More than 4.7 million tickets across the country won prizes ranging from $4 up to $150,000 during this draw period.
The last time someone won a Powerball jackpot was on May 31 when a player from California took home a grand prize of $204.5 million (https://www.powerball.com/).
To win a jackpot in Powerball, players must match all five white balls plus the red Powerball number; odds are approximately 1 in 292 million (https://www.powerball.com/odds). Tickets can be purchased on drawing days with varying prices and sales times depending on state regulations.
