A New Mexico state police officer carried out a rescue after an overturned vehicle was caught in floodwaters near Buckhorn on Sunday, August 31. Officer Walker Eby responded to the scene just after 3 p.m., according to a statement from the New Mexico State Police.

Upon arrival, Eby found a woman, child, and dog stranded on top of the wrecked vehicle as water rushed around them. Local firefighters and volunteers also assisted at the scene. A backhoe was used to prevent the vehicle from being swept further downstream.

According to police, “Eby crawled across a ladder over the water to the vehicle, then crawled back with the child on his back,” as shown in video footage released by authorities. He then returned with a safety line for the woman and a harness for the dog. Both were safely rescued.

The New Mexico State Police said, “We are incredibly proud of the bravery displayed by Officer Eby, our first-responder partners, and the local residents in this increasingly dangerous situation.”

Buckhorn is located approximately 270 miles southwest of Albuquerque.
