An Ohio resident from Carrollton won a $500,000 lottery jackpot after purchasing the last scratch-off ticket on a roll. The man had spent the day taking his wife to cancer treatment appointments before deciding to stop and buy some lottery tickets, according to an Aug. 27 news release from the Ohio Lottery.

He selected a couple of $5 scratch-off tickets and also chose the final $10 Best of 7’s ticket available. “I like the end of the roll, I’ll buy in the middle too, but always liked the end of the roll best,” he told lottery officials.

Upon scratching off his ticket, he discovered that he had won the top prize. “I still can’t believe it. I still think it’s a dream,” he said.

He shared the news with his wife immediately. “She looked at me funny and said, ‘did you fall?’ I said ‘no I’m in shock! I think I won half a million dollars,’” he recounted.

His wife remained skeptical until he scanned the ticket and showed her confirmation of their win, according to lottery officials.

The winner noted that his family is facing significant medical expenses due to his wife’s ongoing treatments. He described winning as a blessing and plans to use part of his winnings to pay off those bills. Once his wife is feeling better, they hope to do something enjoyable together.

After taxes are deducted, he will receive $360,000.
