Pope Leo XIV celebrated his 70th birthday on Sunday in St Peter’s Square, where he addressed thousands of people following the traditional Angelus prayer.

“My dear ones, it seems you know that I have turned 70 today,” Pope Leo said to those gathered. “I thank the Lord, my parents and all those who have included me in their prayers.”

Attendees held up balloons and banners with messages such as “Best Wishes, Pope Leo” written in Italian. Others offered greetings in English, acknowledging the pope as the first U.S. citizen to lead the Roman Catholic Church.

Following his remarks, bands played music to mark the occasion in front of St Peter’s Basilica.
