Sequoyah High School improved its football record to 3-0 after a decisive 37-6 win over Kell at Skip Pope Stadium on Friday. The victory also moved head coach James Teter within one game of reaching 100 career wins in Georgia.

The Chiefs’ defense limited Kell quarterback Kaleb Narcisse and his offense, highlighted by two interceptions from Brooks Darling. Sequoyah kept Kell scoreless through the first half, with the Longhorns’ only touchdown coming late in the game.

“Our defense played outstanding,” said Teter. “We felt like we had to eat up time, and even though we were only getting three at times, we were still getting the clock to run down. We had a couple of turnovers that really helped us get a lead big enough where we were confident they wouldn’t come back.”

Sequoyah relied on running back Will Rajecki for much of its offense. Rajecki finished with 223 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 28 carries. The Chiefs completed just five passes during the game, including a trick play where Rajecki threw a 21-yard pass to quarterback Kolby Martin.

Kell managed to keep the score close in the first half by stopping several Sequoyah drives in the red zone. Kicker Leif Hansen made all three field goal attempts before halftime and narrowly missed a 54-yarder in the third quarter.

“It’s awesome because we know if we get across the 50, we’re going to try and at least get some points out of it,” Teter said. “We don’t have to worry about whether we need to go for it on fourth down. (Hansen) came up huge tonight.”

Kell’s running back Moonie Gibson gained 184 yards on 25 carries and added another 10 yards receiving. Narcisse was held to eight completions on eighteen attempts for 131 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions.

“It was about limiting those explosive plays – we preached that all week,” Darling said. “They have a lot of good athletes, so we really had to just keep everything in front of us and make them drive it down the field.”

Kell scored its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter following long completions from Narcisse to Donte Grant and Brayden Rouse. However, Sequoyah responded quickly as Rajecki scored again on consecutive drives, including a 71-yard run.

The matchup concluded Sequoyah’s non-region schedule; they will face Region 6AAAAA opponent Riverwood next week. Teter emphasized that region games are what matter most: “They’re all important because we want to win, but they don’t mean anything in the region,” he said. “So really, region-wise, we’re still 0-0. We are just using this to get better for what we want to do down the road.”

Kell will begin its region play October 3 against Blessed Trinity but travels next week to Wheeler.
