A pair of sperm whales was observed off the coast of Oceanside, California, in what a whale-watching company described as an “incredible sighting.” According to a news release from Oceanside Adventures dated September 14, this is the first time in ten years that the company has encountered these creatures.

The whales, named Kiwi and Guava, were spotted about 5.5 miles offshore. The company noted that these two have been seen together at least four times since 2023 in other locations. The sighting was documented by the boat’s drone operator.

Sperm whales are not commonly found near Oceanside because they prefer deeper waters where they dive for squid, their primary food source. Oceanside Adventures explained that these animals can remain submerged for up to two hours, which makes them difficult to locate.

Instagram users reacted to images and video from the encounter with comments such as “magical for sure!” and “So amazing!”

Oceanside is located roughly 80 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
