An estate in Pasadena, California, known as the Norton House, has been listed for sale at $2.75 million. The property was designed by the postwar architectural firm Buff, Straub & Hensman and is recognized for its Post & Beam Modernism style.
According to the listing on Compass, “A Southwest Pasadena masterwork of Post & Beam Modernism, designed by Buff, Straub & Hensman, FAIA — nestled from view within a cluster of trees and uniquely sited to take advantage of the natural ‘small suburban stream’ that gently meanders through the property.”
The home was originally built in 1954 and covers 2,564 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The listing notes that “the architectural triumph is achieved through the simplicity of its rectangular programmatic design and restrained compilation of concrete, douglas fir and walls of glass.”
One distinctive feature is a Jack and Jill bathroom garden overlooking a small Japanese garden. This bathroom was featured in Sunset Magazine in 1958. Additional features include multiple ponds, patios, pathways and a stream running through the property.
The Norton House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
