Teen fatally shot during hunting trip after being mistaken for animal

A 17-year-old boy, Carson Ryan, died after being shot during a hunting trip in rural Brighton, Iowa. According to reports from KWWL and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Ryan was mistaken for a squirrel by another member of his hunting party and was shot in the back of the head.

Ryan was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The incident occurred on September 27. A news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated, “[Ryan] was mistaken for a squirrel by a member of his hunting party and was struck in the back of the head,” as reported by the Des Moines Register.

A GoFundMe page created in Ryan’s memory described him as “a son, friend, and bright light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, humor, and genuine spirit touched countless lives, and his loss leaves an immeasurable void.”

Community members have expressed their grief online following news of Ryan’s death. The Washington Demons Boys Basketball team posted on Facebook: “Last night’s vigil showed just how impactful Carson Ryan has been for so many people in our community. Our hearts are broken as we navigate the devastating loss of Carson.”

Schools across southeastern Iowa have shared messages supporting Ryan’s family and encouraging students to wear orange and black at the start of the school week.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating the shooting along with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. As of now, it is unclear if any arrests or charges have been made.

Brighton is located about 70 miles south of Cedar Rapids.
