A woman in Universal City, Texas, has been charged with capital murder after allegedly stabbing her 9-year-old son to death. Authorities responded to a home in the early hours of September 3, following a disturbance reported by the child’s father, who is a police officer in China Grove.

Officers found David Medina-Ehanire with stab wounds to his neck and abdomen. He was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries, according to reports from the San Antonio Express-News.

Police identified Wilma Jamitza Medina, 50, as the suspect. During a news conference on September 5, Universal City Police Chief Johnny Siemens said, “Crimes like this shock your conscience, rock you to your core.” He added, “You can’t unsee some of the stuff that you see, and you can’t understand why it would happen.”

According to an arrest affidavit cited by KSAT, the boy’s father had returned home shortly before the incident and heard a disturbance coming from a bedroom. KSAT reported: “Police say once he got inside, he saw Medina holding the 9-year-old boy, who was not moving. Medina was also stabbing herself, according to police, before her husband grabbed her and tried to get what was called a dagger-like object away from her.”

Medina received treatment at a hospital following the incident. Police stated she did not have any known prior mental health issues.

Investigators were told by Medina that she believed she was being followed and that her son was being harmed at school.

Sgt. David Fawcett commented during the news conference: “Moving forward, we hope we never see anything like this again. It was terrible.”

Medina is currently held in Bexar County Jail on $600,000 bond.

Universal City is located about 20 miles northeast of San Antonio.
