A service dog in Texas has found a new home after her owner entered hospice care. Kerrville Pets Alive, an animal shelter in Kerrville, posted about Callie, an Australian shepherd who had served as a lifesaving companion for more than eight years.
“For more than eight years, Callie — a sweet Australian shepherd — was more than a companion to her owner. She was a lifesaver,” the shelter stated in a Facebook post dated August 30.
“As her owner’s service dog, Callie faithfully stayed by his side, alerting him whenever his breathing became faint.”
After Callie’s owner moved into hospice, the shelter worked to secure both medical attention and a new placement for the dog. The organization partnered with Peterson Hospice Pet Peace of Mind program to provide necessary veterinary care, including minor toe surgery.
“Kerrville Pets Alive! along with the Peterson Hospice Pet Peace of Mind program, has provided the medical care she needed — including a minor toe surgery. Callie is ready to begin her next chapter,” according to the shelter.
“At 73 pounds, she is on a healthy slim-down plan. She enjoys belly rubs, naps and gentle companionship.”
The social media post drew significant attention online, receiving over 1,600 likes and nearly 1,000 shares. This interest led to Callie being adopted soon after.
“We have great news! We were overwhelmed with interest in Callie. We have found the perfect placement for her where she will be loved and cared for,” Kerrville Pets Alive said in an update.
Kerrville is located about 100 miles west of Austin.
