The Twiggs County Public Schools community is mourning the loss of Michelle Capece, a longtime educator who was recently named the district’s 2025-26 Teacher of the Year. Capece, who taught at Jeffersonville Elementary School, died Tuesday at age 60, according to a statement from the school district.
District officials including interim Superintendent Tyrone Bacon, Jeffersonville Elementary Principal Mark Davis, and the Twiggs County Board of Education have expressed their condolences to Capece’s family. The district described her as “a devoted (Twiggs County Public Schools) educator for over 20 years,” adding: “Ms. Capece’s legacy of service continues to have lasting impact on the Twiggs County community. She was a cornerstone of this community, and we will miss her presence and dedication profoundly.”
Capece had been involved with Twiggs County schools for 24 years, participating in classroom teaching as well as extracurricular activities such as the Junior Beta Club and local sports fields.
Arrangements are being handled by Serenity Funeral Home in Dublin. Assistant Superintendent James Austin said that additional information from Capece’s family has not yet been provided but will be shared on district social media when available.
