An all-terrain vehicle carrying nine people crashed at Indian Mountain ATV Park near Piedmont, Alabama, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries among children, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that several 911 calls were made around 4 p.m. after a side-by-side RZR collided with another ATV, rolled over, and struck a tree. First responders arrived to find eight injured individuals — an adult woman and seven children ranging from ages 1 to 12. The driver of the ATV was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman later died at a hospital while all seven children were transported for medical care. According to AL.com, one child remains in critical condition (https://www.al.com/news/2025/08/mass-casualty-atv-crash-in-alabama-kills-2-injures-7-children.html). Local reports indicate that the man and woman who died are believed to have been a couple.

Coosa Valley News reported that those riding in the other ATV involved were not hurt (https://coosavalleynews.com/2025/08/two-dead-seven-children-injured-after-mass-casualty-atv-crash-in-cherokee-county/).

“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones and with those who were injured,” stated the county coroner’s office in a news release, describing the event as a “mass casualty incident.”

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Piedmont is located about 90 miles northeast of Birmingham.
