The U.S. Department of Energy has reported that domestic oil and natural gas production reached record levels in 2025, with crude oil output hitting 13.6 million barrels per day. The department expects this trend to continue into 2026. As a result of the increased production, gas prices have fallen to a four-year low, averaging about $2.90 per gallon nationwide, with prices under $3 per gallon in 43 states.

Natural gas production is also at an all-time high and is projected to reach 109 billion cubic feet per day this year. The Energy Dominance Financing Program (EDF), introduced under the Working Families Tax cut, continues to support the development of new natural gas projects in the country.

According to the American Gas Association, over the past 17 years—including projections for 2025—natural gas use has led to inflation-adjusted savings totaling $1.6 trillion compared to prices in 2008. This translates to an average savings of $3,445 for American households.

Efforts are underway by the Energy Department to rebuild the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) after it was drawn down by 180 million barrels in 2022 during the previous administration. In November 2025, contracts were awarded for one million barrels of crude oil deliveries from the Bryan Mound site between December 2025 and January 2026.

U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are increasing rapidly and are expected to double by the end of this decade. This growth follows changes made by current leadership at the Energy Department that removed regulatory barriers on LNG exports and rescinded previous policies that imposed stricter criteria on exporters.

In January 2024, a pause was placed on pending and future LNG export applications by the previous administration due to environmental review concerns. However, a September 2023 study from the Department of Energy found no impact from LNG exports on U.S. greenhouse gas emissions or energy costs.

Secretary Chris Wright issued a Secretarial Order directing efforts to “Unleash Golden Era of American Energy Dominance.” In line with these directives, more than 17.6 billion cubic feet per day of LNG exports were authorized or re-authorized in 2025—over 70% higher than current export volumes from other leading suppliers.

The department also removed restrictions that previously banned using LNG as marine fuel for ships—a policy that had affected facilities like JAX LNG near Jacksonville, Florida.

On June 11, 2025, JERA—a Japanese energy company—announced alongside Secretary Wright and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum its commitment to long-term U.S. LNG purchases through several twenty-year agreements with American companies. These agreements will secure up to 5.5 million tonnes per year of LNG for JERA and are expected to contribute over $200 billion annually to U.S. GDP while supporting more than 50,000 jobs each year.

A finalized study released by the department in May 2025 confirmed that robust natural gas supplies benefit national security while boosting GDP and job creation through expanded exports.

“Unleash Golden Era of American Energy Dominance,” directed Secretary Wright as his first Secretarial Order.
